Closing checklist

Two checklists for the day a deal closes: one for buying a home in the United States, and one for the documents, consents, and money a business sale needs at its closing.

A starting point, not legal advice: have a lawyer in your state read it before you use it.

About the closing checklist

What a closing checklist is for

Closing is the moment everything has to be true at once: the documents signed, the conditions met, and the money in place. A checklist lists each thing, who is responsible for it, and where it stands, so nothing is found missing on the day.

For a home, the buyer's checklist runs from loan approval to the keys. For a business sale, the lawyers' checklist lists every document to be signed and delivered, grouped by kind, and it becomes the index of the closing set afterwards.

The three days before a home closing

A buyer with a mortgage must receive the Closing Disclosure at least three business days before closing, which is the time to compare it with the Loan Estimate. Wire instructions for the closing funds should be confirmed by phone with the settlement agent, using a number you already know, never one from an email.

Running a business closing from the checklist

On ShareSign, each document in a closing is signed ahead of time and held until every condition is met. The checklist shows each document's number, whose job it is, and its status, live for your client and as a Word document for the other side, and at the release every held signature completes at once.

Send it for signature on ShareSign
